About Me

Picture
As you have probably guessed, I'm Jasmine.  A 20 something, southern, imaginative engineer to be.    I was born and raised in Georgia. My family is from North Carolina.  Americorps is how I came to live in California, I volunteered a year with an awesome non-profit known as OTX West. They give away refurbished computers and teach classes.

Once my first service year was over, I spent a year running nerdy hustles and volunteering.  I took classes at Laney College in Energy Efficiency. Finished with a 4.0. It really gave me an opportunity to learn some hands-on practical skills in away that only a technical school could provide.  I finished the program in March 2011 with a 4.0 and was able to obtain a summer job with one of my teachers, a licensed engineer.  This lead to me working fall semester and being invited to work this upcoming summer.  On my second Cali-versary, I was offered a position in ClimateCorps Bay Area, to be the volunteer coordinator for GRID Alternatives in the Bay Area.  So now I spend my days improving job-training partnerships, assigning volunteers to installations, and communicating to a volunteer-base of well over 1500.

Before arriving to Oakland I have worked mainly in graphic design and food services. I have over 10 years experience as a graphic designer, including web design and development. Culinary-wise I have 3 years experience in the food service industry from line cook to pastry chef.

I've wanted to be an engineer for as long as I can remember.  As a kid, watching James Bond and Get Smart fueled my imagination to thinking of random inventions.  The Japanese in me has an obsession with vending machine design.  Sometimes I think in CSS.  While I was studying Electrical Engineering Technology at Georgia Southern it made me realised that sometimes engineers over-complicate things. Georgia Southern really helped me develop a real-word sense of idea development without dismissing more exotic conflagrations.

Part of my creativity is definitely fueled from my upbringing.  Being raised in Augusta, Georgia which is a very diverse town and going to Davidson Fine Arts. From the 5th to 12th grade, my college prep education involved audio visual production, package design, piano playing, and a little bit of tap dancing.   So my mind works differently than most.  While some were struggling for ideas in Senior Project I had too many over-budget ones. Like a cockroach-like nanobot with more earth-friendly insecticide.  I ended up programming the software and dispensing unit for  a state of the art coffee maker, with personalized settings.  Calibrating the solenoid dispensing unit left me with a scar I still have.

In my free time,  I have several hobbies.  I enjoy dancing, swimming, and nature walks.  Anime and video games, the requirement of most nerds.  Making jewellry is another one of my hobbies, in fact any jewellry you may see me wearing on this site I've made.  Creating digital media and music.  I love to cook and bake as well.

I want to be an engineer is to help make the world a better place.  Technology is for everybody.

I always remember that,

Jasmine
